Not all intimate accessories are made equal. Some are cheap imports with mystery metals and questionable coatings. Others are built to last — and to keep you safe. Here is what to look for, and why it matters.
Full-Grain Leather
The best leather comes from the top layer of the hide — full-grain. It ages beautifully, softens with use, and develops a unique patina over time. More importantly, it is free from the plastic coatings and chemical treatments found in cheaper “genuine leather” products.
Full-grain leather is hypoallergenic, breathable, and — with proper care — will outlast anything synthetic. Every Noir Rouge leather tool is cut from full-grain hide and finished by hand.
Surgical-Grade Stainless Steel
Anything that touches sensitive skin should be surgical-grade stainless steel — also called 316L. It contains molybdenum, which makes it resistant to corrosion and body fluids. Crucially, it is nickel-free, so it will not cause allergic reactions or skin irritation.
Cheap alloys and plated metals can flake, rust, or leach nickel. If a body chain or clamp does not say what metal it is made from, do not put it on your body.
Medical-Grade Silicone
Not all silicone is body-safe. Medical-grade silicone — also called platinum-cure silicone — is non-porous, hypoallergenic, and can be sterilised. It does not harbour bacteria. Cheap silicone blends can contain fillers that break down over time and irritate skin.
Nickel-Free Hardware
Nickel allergy is one of the most common contact allergies in the UK — affecting roughly 1 in 5 women. Every clasp, buckle, chain, and ring on Noir Rouge products is nickel-free. If you are unsure whether you react to nickel, test on a small patch of skin first.
Why Cheap Costs More
A £5 body chain from a marketplace seller might look similar in a photo. But mystery metals, poor plating, and untreated leather can cause skin reactions, break after a few uses, or worse. Investing in body-safe materials is not about luxury — it is about health. Quality lasts. Cheap gets thrown away.
