You bought the silk blindfold. The leather paddle. The body chain you could not stop looking at. You used them. Now they are in a drawer – tangled, dusty, and probably touching things they should not be touching. Proper care doubles the lifespan of intimate accessories and keeps them body-safe. Here is exactly how to clean and store every material.

Leather – never soak, never scrub

Full-grain leather is skin. Treat it like skin. After use, wipe with a barely-damp cloth – water only, no soap. Dry immediately with a soft towel. Never soak leather. Never use alcohol or bleach. Once a season, apply a pea-sized amount of leather conditioner – rub it in with your fingers, let it absorb overnight. Store leather flat in a velvet pouch, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Never fold leather – creases become cracks.

Silicone – the easiest to clean

Medical-grade silicone is non-porous, which means bacteria cannot hide inside it. Warm water and mild soap. Lather, rinse, air dry on a clean towel. That is it. Do not use silicone-based lubricant with silicone accessories – the material can degrade. Use water-based lubricant instead. Store silicone items separately from leather (leather oils can transfer).

Metal – keep it dry, keep it separate

Surgical-grade stainless steel and gold-plated chains need only a dry microfiber cloth after use. Moisture is the enemy – always store metal completely dry. Keep chains in individual velvet pouches to prevent tangling and scratching. For deep cleaning, a jewellery polishing cloth works perfectly. Never use chemical jewellery cleaners on intimate metal pieces – the residue can irritate sensitive skin.

Silk and Velvet – hand-wash only

Silk blindfolds and velvet cuffs need gentle care. Hand-wash in cold water with a drop of mild detergent. Swirl – do not wring. Rinse until the water runs clear. Press between two towels to remove excess water – never twist. Air dry flat, away from direct heat. Store silk flat or rolled; velvet can be folded gently. Both should live in their own pouches, away from anything with zippers or Velcro that could snag.

The golden rule – separate everything

Leather against metal? Scratches. Silicone against leather? Oil transfer. Chains tangled with silk? A knot that will take twenty minutes and a lot of swearing to undo. Each piece deserves its own velvet pouch. If you do not have enough pouches, use clean cotton socks. Yes – socks. They are breathable, soft, and free. The drawer of shame becomes the drawer of intention. Organise it. Your future self – reaching for a piece in the dark, finding it clean and ready – will thank you.
