The difference between a nightdress that lives on your body and one that lives on the hanger is not the fabric or the colour. It is the fit. And fit is not about size — it is about knowing which questions to ask before you click buy.

Start with the straps

Adjustable straps are the single most important fit feature in a slip dress. They give you roughly 8-10cm of adjustability, which means the difference between a neckline that gapes and one that sits exactly where you want it. If you are between sizes, choose the one with adjustable straps. Always.

Fixed straps (spaghetti straps that cannot be adjusted) look cleaner in photographs. On a real body, they either fit perfectly or do not. There is no middle ground. If you are buying fixed-strap nightwear online, check the product description for strap length and compare it to something you already own that fits.

The bust: your most important measurement

Sleepwear sizing is not like daywear. There is no bra holding things in place. The fabric itself has to do the work — which means the bust measurement matters more here than on any other garment you own.

Measure around the fullest part of your bust while wearing the kind of undergarment you would wear under the nightdress. If you plan to wear nothing underneath, measure that way. Compare that number to the brand’s size chart — not to your usual dress size.

A nightdress that is slightly loose across the bust drapes beautifully. One that is slightly tight pulls across the seams and looks strained even before you move. When in doubt, size up. You can always take in a strap. You cannot add fabric.

Length: where should it fall?

Nightdress lengths generally fall into three categories:

If the product description does not list the garment length, email the brand and ask. A nightdress that looks midi on a 175cm model will be maxi on someone who is 160cm.

Fabric and drape: how it moves matters

A stiff satin hangs differently from a liquid one. Before buying, look at how the fabric behaves in the product images. Does it cling? Does it skim? Does it hold its shape or pool like water?

For a forgiving fit, choose a bias-cut slip. Bias-cut means the fabric is cut at a 45-degree angle to the weave, which creates natural stretch and drape without any elastane. It follows the body rather than squeezing it.

The mirror test

When you try it on, do three things: sit down, reach forward, raise your arms above your head. Does the nightdress move with you or fight you? A well-fitting nightdress should be forgotten within five minutes of putting it on. If you keep adjusting it, it does not fit — no matter what the label says. If you like the ease of layering, a slip dress and robe set gives you two ways to wear the same silhouette.
